I was caught up in the thing called "busy life" again...

For this reason, I told myself that I am going to read at least few pages of something (in a paper form) every night... nothing in the digital form. The way it is, I don't do anything else than sitting in front of a shining screen whether at home or at uni pretty much all the time. One way or the other, the last year of my BSc. is a bit more intense and on top of that, I kinda have the idea of what it takes and what you need to sacrifice if you want to have good results. My life consists of constant research, reading, writing up lecture notes, writing essays, sending emails, planning events and to top it all, regular procrastination with Netflix, Instagram etc.; you all know what I mean. Simply expressed, I'm permanently surrounded by screen or monitor whether small or big. And so I want to share with you some of my favourite books and magazines which inspire me and which I tend to read through before going to sleep.
// Řekla jsem si proto, že si před spaním vždycky přečtu alespoň pár stránek něčeho na papíře.. ne nic v digitální formě. Poslední dny jen sedím před svítící obrazovkou ať už doma nebo na uni a takhle se to opakuje už několik měsíců, týdnu a dní. Poslední rok bakaláře je trochu intenzivnější a tak nějak i tuším, co to všechno obnáší, když chce člověk dosáhnout dobrých výsledků... Můj život je teď neustálá research, čtení, dopisování přednášek, psaní esejí, psaní emailů, psaní zpráv, plánování akcí a do toho časná prokrastinace s Netflixem, Instagramem atp.; však to znáte. Zkrátka řečeno, neustále před obrazovkou, ať už velkou nebo malou. Chci se tedy s vámi podělit o to, co momentálně před spaním pročítám a co mě obecně inspiruje.
1. Note to Self - Connor Franta
I came across this book before Christmas in Urban Outfitters and it caught my attention when I was browsing through. I did not buy it back then but I found it again in one of the Prague's bookshops by coincidence after Christmas and they had the last one on display. I guess it was a destiny so I just bought it that day and since then it's my absolute favourite. To be honest with you, I did not realise who was the person who wrote this book at first. But still, I was constantly questioning myself in the course of reading trying to remember who's the boy in the pictures or who he reminds me of (maybe, erm, Connor?). I must say, I am a bit sceptical about books by Influencers. I wouldn't buy a book about like "how YouTube changed my life or how to build a huge fan base". However, this book is completely different. It reflects on common life situations which I am pretty sure everyone knows and experiences frequently. In this case, I sometimes find myself just nodding approvingly. It is an easy read with all the stories not exceeding more than 2 pages. The whole book is accompanied by poems and photographs... so go get it!
// Narazila jsem na tuhle klížku v Urban Outfitters někdy před Vánoci a hrozně mě zaujala, když jsem v ní listovala. Každopádně jsem jí tam ale nechala. Shodou náhod jsem jí pak po Vánocích objevila v Praze znovu. Už měli jen jednu. Osud tomu asi tak chtěl, mně to nedalo a přidala jsem do své knihovny teda i tuhle. Je to můj absolutní favorit. Vlastně až v průběhu knihy, kdy jsem viděla pár fotek Connora mezi řádky, mi došlo, kdo knihu napsal. Předtím jsem jen neustále polemizovala nad tím, koho mi Connor připomíná (hm, žeby Connora?). Narovinu musím říct, že jsem vůči knížkám od influencerů skeptická. Asi bych si nekoupila knížku typu "jak YouTube změnil můj život" nebo "jak jsem si vybudoval empire fanoušků". S touhle knížkou to ale nemá nic společného, je úplně jiná. Promítají se v ní běžné životní situace, se kterými jsme se skoro každý setkali. Mám pocit, že se z většinou jeho myšlenek ztotožňuji, až se kolikrát pozastavím nad tím, jak moc nad čtením kapitoly souhlasně kývu hlavou. Je to velmi odpočinkové čtení a příběhy nejsou delší jak dvě stránky. Doplněno je to poezií a fotografiemi. Perfektní kombinace a lehké, ale zároveň inspirující čtení.
2. Milk and Honey - Rupi Kaur
Cliché? Classics? Current focal point of literature and the majority of bookshops? Do I even have to introduce this book? Well, let's be clear here. It is not a book full of stories, rather a collection of poems. The poetry serves as food for thought. It can be a two-line poem or a whole-page one, but one way or the other, it is powerful. The majority of readers are able to go along with most of the poems and it's only upon us how we interpret them. In my case, I just flip through the book from time to time and I find a poem according to my mood. Believe it or not, you will find what you need.
// Cliché? Klasika? Momentální středobod literatury a většiny knihkupectví? Musím vůbec představovat? Nejedná se o žádné velké čtení, to si uznejme, ale poezie a zamyšlení se nad určitými věcmi třeba i ve dvou řádcích nebo pár slovech v sobě má prostě sílu. Skoro každý se dokáže ztotožnit a je jen na každém, jak si určitou báseň zinterpretuje. Čas od času tak prostě zalovím a podle nálady otevřu tam, kde je třeba. A věřte nebo ne, každý den tam najdete to, co potřebujete.
3. Suitcase Magazine
Probably one of the first magazines I really fell in love with. I found it at the airport back then when I was flying home. I became so absorbed in the reading that it seemed like my flight lasted for no more than 10 minutes. Suitcase focuses on travelling and fashion (yes, the perfect combination) accompanied by interviews with some interesting people. With each issue, Suitcase takes you to various interesting places you might have never heard of before. If you need any advice or inspiration of what to take with you to these destinations, the fashion section is made exactly for you. What makes Suitcase different from other magazines is the essence of travel recommendations, fashion tips and interviews which differ from the traditional mainstream magazines and travel guides. It is more authentic and the whole magazine is filled with interesting stories and photography. I like the interviews which usually contain some inspiring philosophical thoughts of those who participate on the certain issue.
// Asi jeden z prvních magazínů, do kterých jsem se opravdu zamilovala. Tenkrát jsem ho objevila na letišti, než jsem letěla domů a tak jsem se začtla, že mi přišlo, že jsme letěli jen tak 10 minut. Perfektní kombinace cestování a módy doplněno příběhy a rozhovory se zajímavými lidmi. V každém díle se cestuje na různá zajímavá místa, o kterých jsem předtím třeba ani neslyšela. V sekci módy jsou rady, co do této destinace s sebou. Podstatné je to, že se nejedná o tipy podobné turistickým průvodcům, ale jedná se o autentické příběhy doplněné o spoustu fotografií. Zkrátka a dobře, líbí se mi rozhovory a filosofické myšlenky několika zajímavých lidí, kteří se na určitém čísle podílejí.
4. Oh Comely
Oh comely focuses mainly on the topics of creativity, stories of inspiring people, curiosity, ideas, individual work and culture. Each issue is specialized in a different topic, hence the whole content is created around it. It reminds me that I need to stop by the newsagents to buy a new issue. As I have a pile of different magazines and books (as you can see for yourself in this article), it is rather hard to go through all of them quickly. However, this magazine is worth it. I enjoy reading the authentic stories of such a creative people who do what they enjoy.
// Oh Comely je zaměřen na kreativitu, příběhy lidí, kuriozity, nápady, vlastní tvorbu a kulturu. Každý díl má jiné téma, od kterého se odvíjí veškerý obsah uvnitř. Což mi připomíná, že se musím zastavit v trafice a koupit si nový díl. S kupou magazínů mi vždycky trvá se přelouskat přes jeden magazín a během té doby pak vyjde několik dalších. Nicméně tenhle za to opravdu stojí. Je fajn si přečíst autentické příběhy a tvorbu lidí, kteří dělají to, co je baví a není to žádné cliché.
5. Cereal
In terms of the content, Cereal is similar to previously mentioned Suitcase magazine. However, Cereal is published only twice a year and each issue focuses on a small selection of destinations which are accompanied by interesting interviews with stories from design and fashion industry. Cereal gives very minimalistic and professional impression but it is worth having for sure!
// Obsahově se podobá již zmiňovanému Suitcase mag. Nicméně Cereal vychází jen dvakrát do roka a čísla se zaměřují hlavně na výběr destinací doplněné o zajímavé rozhovory, design a módu. Magazín působí velmi minimalisticky a profesionálně.
6. New Philosopher
Last but not least, let me present you the New Philosopher. It is a magazine which focuses on philosophy and thoughts and which reflects on today's world and our way of living. Don't worry, the stories are not difficult or complex, they are very easy to read. It's written by a variety of people from different industries (not just philosophers). Hence, it's not an additional study material for those studying philosophy. It's more like an inspiration and it's purpose is for us to think about our lives and how we can change them. It's published quarterly and this current issue I have focuses on what we, as a society, consume and how. So in a way, it is a good supplement to some of my marketing courses. In short, you will look at things differently after you read it!
// Magazín, který se zaměřuje na filosofické myšlenky, které reflektují dnešní svět a náš způsob žití. Čte se výborně, protože je psán několika lidmi z různých oborů a ne jen filosofy. Proto není brán jako doplňek k učení, pokud někdo studuje filosofii. Jeho účel je spíše ten, abychom se zamysleli nad tím, jak žijeme v dnešním světě a jak můžeme naše životy změnit. Vychází čtyřikrát do roka a zrovna tenhle díl je zaměřen na to, co jako společnost konzumujeme a jak. Výborný doplněk k mému předmětu v marketingu. Člověk se tak koukne na věci z úplně jiného pohledu a zmyslí se nad určitými věcmi jinak.
